Orphan drugs: a roadmap to the future

Every patient has the right to receive effective treatment, including patients with a rare disease. But this proves a big challenge: for the vast majority of the approximately 7,000 rare diseases, there is no treatment available. The Dutch Association of Innovative Medicines (NL: VIG) therefore asked us to broaden the discussion on the importance of these medicines and provide the field with starting points to improve access to orphan drugs.

From bottlenecks to action perspectives

We brought together nearly 50 experts from the field to form four working groups, and together we identified key challenges and opportunities for progress. Our efforts culminated in an online ‘roadmap to the future’, which was launched at the symposium that we organized. This roadmap provides practical guidance for overcoming bottlenecks and implementing promising actions that will advance the development and accessibility of orphan drugs.

Working together to improve access

Our project approach focused on collaboration, recognizing the challenges and concerns unique to each stakeholder. Through facilitation of discussions and identification of key gaps, we brought stakeholders closer together and created practical guidance to advance the accessibility of orphan drugs. We developed a strong concept that served as the backbone of both the comprehensive roadmap and successful symposium.
