Calculating Vomar's total Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon footprint

The client is Vomar Voordeelmarkt, a fast-growing Dutch supermarket chain with over 100 stores. Vomar wants to fulfill its social responsibility and asked us to map its entire CO₂ footprint (Scope 1, 2, and 3) in accordance with the GHG Protocol. The main challenge lay in collecting and structuring data on all aspects of business operations: from energy consumption in stores and distribution centers to logistics, staff mobility, and chain emissions such as purchased products and waste. Vomar was not only looking for insight, but also for practical measures to effectively reduce emissions.

From Insight to Reduction

We developed a customised emissions tool that gave Vomar control over its total CO₂ emissions (Scope 1, 2 and 3). All data is clearly bundled, from energy and logistics to purchasing and waste. This not only provided insight, but also direction for reduction. We advised on data quality and discussed concrete reduction paths. The result: Vomar now actively manages its climate impact and structurally embeds sustainability in its organization.

Approach: From Intake to Action

Our approach at Vomar began with a thorough intake in which we mapped out the needs, goals, and data flows together with the internal project team. Vomar wanted not only to gain insight into their full carbon footprint (Scope 1, 2, and 3) but also to identify directions for concrete improvement actions.

Based on this, we conducted extensive data collection, collaborating with departments such as purchasing, logistics, and facilities management. We assessed the data quality, filled gaps where necessary, and categorized all data according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Simultaneously, we mapped relevant stakeholders within and outside the organization, such as suppliers and waste processors, to properly substantiate chain emissions.

We then developed a user-friendly emissions tool that brings together all data, calculations, and analyses. This tool enables Vomar to monitor, compare, and adjust emissions annually. In interactive workshops, we discussed the results with the project team and jointly determined the strategic priorities for emission reduction.

Lasting Impact on Operations and Climate

Finally, we formulated proposals for improving data quality and provided guidance on reduction opportunities within areas such as transport, energy consumption, and product range. Our approach helped Vomar not only gain insight but also gain support and a framework for action.

By combining data expertise, strategic thinking, and collaboration with internal teams, we transformed a complex sustainability challenge into a concrete management tool—with lasting impact on both business operations and climate impact.
