Working to restore biodiversity

Biodiversity in the Netherlands is under severe pressure. Agriculture and other land managers are faced with the task of improving biodiversity, the environment, and the quality of our living environment. The Arable Biodiversity Monitor will develop a method to measure the impact of the arable farmer on biodiversity. This will allow farmers to be rewarded from within the chain for their performance on biodiversity. We have been asked to coordinate the project. The Biodiversity Monitor Arable Farming is an initiative of BO Akkerbouw, Rabobank, WWF and the Province of Groningen.

The Biodiversity Monitor uses Critical Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure the influence of business operations on biodiversity on the farm and in the environment. This uses an integral set of KPIs in the areas of land use, soil, climate, and environment, which directly affect biodiversity. By collecting and analysing individual farm data in the monitor, arable farmers' commitment to the environment, climate, nature and landscape can be monitored in a uniform and integral manner.

Working together on biodiversity restoration

The development of the monitor is part of the Delta Plan for Biodiversity Restoration. In time, the monitor can also be used for specific rewards and appreciation of performance, for example in the form of an interest rebate for loans from a bank. Based on the knowledge gained from the monitor, we can take action and together turn the loss of biodiversity into restoration.
