Dialogue for health

As discussions in healthcare are often about the patient and not together with the patient, we worked closely with patient organisation Hematon during this project. Using a survey and a conversation dinner, we caught up with stakeholders in healthcare: patients, practitioners and scientists. We talked about the opportunities and challenges they experience in Samen Beslissen. We used the results as input for a broader dialogue during the Societal Café 'Deciding Together'.

Bringing stakeholder together

At the Societal Café we brought together 35 patients, practitioners, and other healthcare stakeholders. Everyone seemed to agree that co-decision is desirable. But how? That question provokes more discussion. With Kahler disease, for example, introducing patient decision aids is a step in the right direction. But practitioners must learn to fully utilise such options. A decision aid only helps if it is discussed with the patient and if the specialist dares to deviate from it.

Impactful debate

The closing debate brought valuable insights from the audience concluding that medical specialists are open to shared decision making, but they want to be helped. By the treatment team, by their training and by the patients themselves.
