European Food Forum on Omnibus
I had the privilege of speaking at a European Food Forum event in the European Parliament on March 18, 2025, about Omnibus I, the European Commission’s proposal to simplify sustainability regulations. Other speakers represented food companies, retailers, and NGOs.
MEP Elena Donazzan aptly noted that there is broad consensus on the need to simplify regulations and reduce administrative burdens for businesses. However, she pointed out that the real challenge is about reaching an agreement on the scope and details of the proposed measures.
The European Commission emphasized that the first part of Omnibus I, the so-called "stop the clock" measure, has strong support from the European Council. It is expected to be adopted quickly, likely before the summer. This would pave the way for further discussions on the proposal's content, with the Commission aiming for an agreement by the end of 2025.
Businesses support the Commission’s proposal to simplify regulations. The focus on limited assurance will help reduce compliance costs, and the additional time granted will allow companies to prepare properly. However, competitiveness and sustainability go hand in hand. The primary goal should be to further strengthen business resilience and supply chain stability.
It is therefore crucial that the Commission remains committed to the ambitions set out in the European Green Deal. Equally important is ensuring that stakeholders are closely involved in shaping the final proposals. By working together, businesses can transition smoothly and sustainably toward a greener economy.
