Double materiality as the foundation
Plukon’s 2024 sustainability report is the first to be based on the double materiality analysis (DMA) conducted in 2024, a requirement under the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). This means Plukon reports not only on its impact on people, the environment, animals, and society, but also on how these topics pose risks and opportunities for the company. For example, climate change and extreme weather events can affect the poultry supply chain and, consequently, Plukon’s operations. The DMA identified twelve key topics, which Plukon used to set targets, refine policies, and roll them out internationally.
ESG as the guiding framework
The report is structured according to the CSRD’s reporting standards: the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). For the first time, ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) forms the core structure of the report. Each chapter highlights a theme and follows a consistent format: outlining ambitions, measuring progress, and detailing related policies and actions.
Where goals or policies are still under development, the report clearly indicates when Plukon expects to define them. A dedicated section highlights topics of particular relevance to Plukon, such as animal welfare, responsible antibiotic use, complementary proteins, and valorisation of the whole bird—issues that resonate deeply within the organization.
Clear structure, compelling narratives
Each chapter begins with a framework: what is the impact, risk, or opportunity, and where in the value chain does it occur? At the end of each chapter, the report identifies who within Plukon is responsible—from policy development to implementation and data collection. Thanks to this structure and visual support for complex topics, the report is easy to follow—even for those without ESG expertise. Naturally, the report also includes the essentials: Plukon’s value chains, value creation model, and the integration of sustainability within the organization.
The human side of sustainability
To complete the narrative, the report features four interviews and an introduction to members of Plukon’s new sustainability team. Employees and stakeholders share their perspectives on the 2024 results: how they were achieved, what went well, and where challenges remain. These personal insights bring the report to life and make it relatable.
Looking ahead with ambition and realism
Although the CSRD implementation for large companies has been postponed by two years and the ESRS requirements are being simplified, Plukon continues to move forward. The company is committed to building a measurable, actionable strategy and implementing it across all seven European countries. Plukon aims to be transparent—even about dilemmas and difficult decisions involved in producing fresh, healthy, and varied food for millions of Europeans in a way that is affordable, responsible, and sustainable.
